FIND Mtg. Presentation Aug. 2009

Friends,

Here is the leadership focus presentation I made at the August FIND meeting that lays out a picture of our current situation, explains reasoning behind our current situation and offers three ways forward with a recommendation of the way that I believe we should go. Please review before the next FIND meeting in September.

Book Bag Video--Lets Put This Together

Here is a brief video highlighting the assembly and drop of of 240 book bags for a local school. St. Paul UMC did a great job, every book bag was filled, labeled with the grade it was for and delivered so that children can start the year off right!

This is why I remain:

When We Are NOT Growing

Tim Stevens of Granger Church offers some solid insights to what churches do when they are not growing. Essentially we forget that our call is to connect people to Jesus, equip them as disciples, and empower them for ministry.

Can This Be Your Church? Can it be MINE?

Occasionally I find something that catches me completely off guard. I read and review dozens of blogs, maintain contacts with church planters, leaders, pastors, and laypersons who want to make a difference. When I came across this video, from a church that is building ministry even before it officially launches its first worship service I was blown away. Take a look, then ask yourself, could this be your church? I sure hope it can be mine! One of the reasons I remain:

The Upside of the Downturn

John Baldoni is an excellent resource for leadership teaching! In the article below he uses the example of how departments stores have continued to re-invent themselves as an analogy to how other businesses (and churches) can see the upside of the downturn.

For churches these are hard decisions. So much of what we do, we do only because we have always done it. We have to determine who we are as a faith community and determine where we want to go. Some churches need to decide if they are willing to pay the cost of growth or if they would rather get smaller and/or close. This is a life cycle choice.

Like our faith, all of our churches have a constant decision to make about whether we will embrace spiritual and personal renewal. Remaining stagnant is easy but in the end leads to death. Renewal means sacrifice, change, and, lets be honest, pain. Take a look at the article and let me know what you think! I remain:

Leadership after Crisis

All of us in ministry, clergy or laity, have had to come in at some time after a crisis. The crisis could be real or just perceived, but either way the issues have to be understood and the congregation moved to a place of healing and renewal. Below is an excellent article about the steps you can take to lead in that process.

My Blog's Word Cloud

I went to www.wordle.net to make a word cloud of my blog. This is a great brainstorming tool you could use to help your church determine their values and get a lot of ideas out at once. Take a look!

Innovative Churches

If you want to see a glimpse of what churches that are reaching the culture have in common, take a look at this video about characteristics of innovative churches. The key is that with clear vision, missional focus, and clear disciple making processes there is less conflict and more action! Take a look:

National Back to Church Sunday

It is NOT TOO LATE! Sept. 13, 2009 is National Back to Church Sunday. This is a great opportunity to reach out to those who have become disconnected from a faith community to give church another try. Click on the link below to download lots of free stuff to help you promote in your area!

If you choose to do this here are some key things to remember:

1. Get Ready: be ready to receive guests warmly, practice, prepare, and plan.

2. Get Set: have a follow up strategy in mind!

3. Go! Make sure when they do show up you invite them to return, participate in other opportunities, and become part of your community!

So, give it a shot! Your empty pews will thank you!

Why Churches Don’t Break the 200 Barrier Bill Easums Observations

Below, Bill Easum hits the nail on the head again. I always say, small churches are small for a reason. If you follow blogs, Bill's is a good one because he is always pithy and to the point, not to mention brutally honest.

Want to know some of the reasons churches stay small? Here are some good ones:

Why Churches Don’t Break the 200 Barrier

Earlier I blogged about what it takes to grow a church from 0-500. Now here are my thoughts about why churches fail to break the 200 in worship barrier.

The church loses its focus on evangelism and turns inward on itself

The laity starts running the church instead of inviting their networks.

The pastor does not respond personally to every signed in visitor with 24-48 hours.

Either the pastor fails to hand-off most ministries or the church expects the pastor to do the ministry and to care for all the people.

The pastor either doesn’t learn how to hire, grow, and fire staff or a church committee does the hiring and firing of all staff.

The church doesn’t see the need to hire more staff, especially a solid worship leader.

The church members expect the pastor to focus on them now that there are enough people to sustain the budget.
